Barbie (2023)

This was a very funny and entertaining comedy satire about the importance of female empowerment and the perils of patriarchal systems.

Oppenheimer (2023)

This is a film based around the creation of the first nuclear bomb and the ethics and morality (or lack of) surrounding it. It also looks at the witch hunts (or canceling) of those who had concerns about the implications and wanted to explore alternatives to capitalism.

It is 3 hours long and seemed to feature a lot of scientific theory, which if you are not a physicist makes it feel like it drags in those bits, and if you aren’t familiar with the historical and political events covered it can get a bit confusing. However, it had an interesting story with lots of well-known people in it.

Elemental (2023)

This latest Pixar film is about a city where the characters are either sure, water, land/earth and air. It focuses on Ember from a fire family and Wade from a water family.

It looks at prejudice, not fitting in, imigrant/refugee families and overcoming hurdles.

It isn’t as fun or exciting as Pixar’s Toy Story but it was still an interesting story.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)

It is 1969, New York is celebrating man landing on the moon, and Prof. Indiana Jones is about to retire. Then his goddaughter turns up and he goes on one last adventure.

This film has sci-fi elements that aren’t in the previous 4 and we discover that the happy ending in the 4th film didn’t last, but it was an entertaining couple of hours.

The Little Mermaid (2023)

This is a “live action” remake of the animated film based on the classic fairy tale about a mermaid who falls in love with a human.

It has good special effects and the classic songs from before.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (2023)

This was the next film about the band of space friends. It shows how they have developed and how they will continue to do so.

I preferred the earlier ones but this still good.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (2023)

Jim Broadbent stars as Harold a retired ordinary man who lives with his wife Maureen, played by Penelope Wilton. One day he gets a letter from an old friend Queenirle who is now in a hospice. Harold writes back but on his way to send the letter he decides to walk to deliver it himself. The only thing is Queenie lives hundreds of miles away on the other side of the country.

It is a pleasant comedy-drama about one mins quest and those he inspires.

Air (2023)

This drama is based on the origins of the Air Jordan brand at Nike in the 1980s.

It was reasonably interesting and had some amusing moments, but it may be aimed at those more familiar with basketball than me.

Hallelujah (2023)

This is an adapted Alan Bennet play with some new bits added.

It tells a story about a geriatric NHS hospital in Yorkshire, which is underfunded but loved by those it serves.

It is generally amusing until a twist in the story.
