Beryl – Kingston Rose Theatre (March 2016)

This is the debut play written by Maxine Peake.  It tells the story of Beryl Burton the most successful cyclist that no-one has heard of.  She was the first woman cyclist to beat a man in an official road race and still holds at least one record.

The play has a small cast who each play a number of different characters and often they break the 4th wall to talk to the audience to explain the background to what is happening and to help tell the story.  It has a number of comedic moments along with some emotional ones too.

10/10
