Alex the Lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippo live in a New York. Zoo. Marty wants to go to he wild and escapes via a tunnel along with some penguins. They are recaptured and Marty and co are transfered overseas but when the penguins take over the ship they end up on the island of Madagascar. The island is ruled by a lemur King Julien and they all make friends.
