Cluedo – New Victoria Theatre, Woking 2.30pm Saturday 26 February 2022

This is an anglicised play adaption of the US movie Clue, which was based on the US Board game Clue – which was an American version of the original British murder mystery board game Cluedo. If you think that’s confusion gbthats nothing compared to the solution (or should that be solutions) to the mystery in the play.

There is quite a bit from the movie, but the location has moved to the UK and involves people linked to Westminster rather than Washington DC. There are also limitations with the stage – but done ingenious scenery allows you to see the various rooms involved.

It is funny and silly with some good laughs – some from the movie and some new ones from the new anglicised ones. The theatre was quite big and possibly less than half full, which was a shame, particularly as the lowest 2 prices were under £20 and had good views. There were no reminders about the advice to we’re masks, and only a few were wearing them, but quite a few in the audience decided to move to empty seats to have more space.

Duke, The (2022)

I saw this as a Curzon members preview. The film stars Jim Broadbent & Helen Mirren as a Geordie couple, and is based on the true story about a 1960s art heist that was carried out for social purposes.

It was a sweet amusing film.

Gosford Park (2021)

This is a murder mystery set at a large country house party, with servants. It is packed within big names and has some comedy elements too.

Rhia is an odd film about 2 mothers and their daughters. It stars Oliva Coleman, Dakota Johnson and Jessie Buckley.

Addams Family, The – Wimbledon Theatre, 15 February 2022 7.30pm

This is a musical adaption of the classic TV comedy and later movies about the creepy and kooky Addams Family.

It started a few minutes late as the audience made their way from the bars to their seats, and again after the interval due to toilet queues, but it was pleasantly surprised to see the number of audience members wearing face coverings (more than 50% from what I could see) despite no PA announcements reminding them and just front of house staff walking around with a sign.

It was funny, with some good new songs (although the classic theme was played it wasn’t sung) and dances.

Carry On Admiral (1957)

This is not part of the famous Carry On series of films and predates them. It is a funny comedy about 2 friends a Navy Captain and a politician who accidentally swapped places after getting drunk.

Victoria and Albert Museum: Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature

This exhibition is free for members but is proofing quite popular. I managed to get a free ticket for a members early morning.

The exhibition space is one of the smaller galleries, but has quite a lot packed in, so it could get crowded very quickly.

It has interesting information about Beatrix’s life, including things she was inspired by on her visits to London Zoo and the V&A. It also has items lined from the museum in the Lake District and examples of her work.

Capital Ring Walk Section 2 – (Falconwood to Mottingham)

https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/walking/falconwood-to-grove-park

This shorter section included woodlands, parks, medieval palace/art deco mansion and some great views of the London skyline. As with section 1, some of the signposts were shared with other walking routes, which sometimes made it harder to work out which way to go.

Capital Ring Walk – Section 1 (Woolwich to Falconwood)

https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/walking/woolwich-to-falconwood

This walk starts at the south side of Woolwich foot tunnel and ends at Falconwood Station.

It includes sights such as the Woolwich ferry, views of London, a secret children’s zoo, a castle, hills, valleys, woodlands and open spaces.

It was reasonably well signed, but the fact the Capital Ring shared signs with the Thames Path, Green Chain, Charlton Tour, and Severndroog Tour and in post designs varied, made it hard at times to work out which signs to follow sometimes. It also sometimes felt the routes were a bit odd and weren’t always the most direct routes even through parks and green spaces.

There were some good discoveries on this route, but at times it was a bit muddy in the woodlands.

Death on the Nile (2022)

After many many delays due to covid, this Kenneth Branagh adaptation of the famous Agatha Christie who done it is finally out.

It is the same basic story of love and jealously, with multiple murders, but with some changes – including some of the characters, Poirot’s backstory, the circumstances of at least one of the murders and an extra romance.

There are some amusing parts and if you are familiar with the story you are likely to spot some of the clues and one pretty big change shortly before it happens.
