Upstart Crow – Apollo Theatre – 7.30pm Saturday 29 October 2022

I saw this as part of a 2 show day along with the matinee of & Juliet. Both were Rush Tickets from TodayTix and it took about 15 mins effort if constant refreshing to get this ticket.

It was well with the effort as the show was a very funny show with elements of farce/slapstick and poking fun at some of the weird bits of Shskespears work and the times he wrote in.

It was a sort of sequel to the BBC sitcom with some of the same cast reprising their roles. It covered issues frequently found in Shakespeare’s work including gender fluidity, sexuality, BAME representation and the position of women in society.

It was also exciting to witness my first post-lockdown “show stop”. It was odd at first as David Mitchell and Gemma Whelan just suddenly walked off stage, then announced that there was a problem and asked the audience to remain in their seats, and the curtain lowered. Then David Mitchel came on in front of the curtain to explain it wasn’t a major problem, and they would be continuing soon. They did just that soon afterwards, returning a few lines when they restarted. As the stop was just before the character of Mr Whiskers was introduced, my guess would be a problem with his costume.

& Juliet – Shaftsbury Theatre – 2.30pm Saturday 29 October 2022

I saw this as part of a 2 show day with Upstart Crow in the evening – so the day was Shakespearean-ish themed. I got £25 TodayTix Rush Tickets for each show and it wasn’t easy. I didn’t get &Juliet until extra Rush Tickets had been released at about 10.45.

It was worth the effort as the show was more entertaining than I had thought it would be.

It is a musical (with modern songs) about Anne Hathaway trying to improve on the ending of her husband (Will Shakespeare)’s new play Romeo & Juliet – with less death and more empowerment.

Les Miserables – Sondheim Theatre – 2.30pm Thursday 13 October 2022

I got a ticket from Tkts online saying 52% on the face value of a ticket bar the back of the stalls.

The view was restricted for some parts due to the curved overhang from the circle, so I wouldn’t want to pay over £70 face value for a seat where you miss anything.

It is a story about revolutionary France, courage, love, heartbreak, passion, and the resilience of the human spirit whilst faced with issues such as poverty – and being brought up by a couple who will NEVER win parents of the year!

My musical preference is for more lightheartedness, but I am pleased I finally got around to seeing Les Mis and the performance was very good.

The Lost King (2022)

This is a dramatisation of the true story about the lady who organised the successful hunt for the body of Richard III in Leicester car park, despite the hurdles she faced in being taken seriously.

Grease The Musical – The Dominion Theatre – 2.30pm Saturday 8 October 2022

Got a £25 on the day Rush Ticket from TodayTix in the stalls saving over 2 thirds on face value. It was slightly to the side but a good view.

Peter Andre and Jason Donovan are the big stars, and got big cheers but their roles are small. Andre is Vince Fontane a DJ who appears at various point while Donovan was Teen Angel.

I am familiar with the movie, but this is the first stage production I have seen. There were sine changes to the order of songs and events and some new songs, but it was still enjoyable. The audience was reasonably well behaved and seemed to comply with the requests to not singalong or film until the megamix at the end.

Noises Off – Richmond Theatre – 7.30pm Wednesday 5 October 2022

I got a cheap rear stalls ticket but due to lack of sales front of house staff said people at the back could choose to move to empty seats further forward so I moved to J21 – saving over 50%.

This is the 5th production I have seen of this farce and it is as hilarious as ever.
