Duke, The (2022)

I saw this as a Curzon members preview. The film stars Jim Broadbent & Helen Mirren as a Geordie couple, and is based on the true story about a 1960s art heist that was carried out for social purposes.

It was a sweet amusing film.

Death on the Nile (2022)

After many many delays due to covid, this Kenneth Branagh adaptation of the famous Agatha Christie who done it is finally out.

It is the same basic story of love and jealously, with multiple murders, but with some changes – including some of the characters, Poirot’s backstory, the circumstances of at least one of the murders and an extra romance.

There are some amusing parts and if you are familiar with the story you are likely to spot some of the clues and one pretty big change shortly before it happens.

Belfast (2022)

This is a (mainly) black & white loosly autobiographical film based on Sir Kenneth Branagh`s childhood during “the troubles”.

It is about a boy called Buddy who is trying to understand what is happening in his community and how it will affect his family.

Despite the subject matter there was a surprising amount if humour – largely from his grandparents.

Overall it was a good film that showed that hatred is bad and war is pointless.

King Richard (2021)

Will Smith stars as Richard Williams in this biopic about how the father of tennis megastars Venus and Serena 8nfluenced their early careers.

It dragged on at times, but overall it was an interesting film.

Mothering Sunday (2021)

This romantic drama was a bit dull. The main action takes place on a Mothering Sunday and essentially involves a doomed romance, but there are many flashbacks and flashforwards, making it a bit confusing and inconclusive at the end.

Spencer (2021)

This is a psychological drama that is a bit odd in places, about the despair Diana, Princess of Wales felt over her husband’s affair, being trapped in the Royal Family and her decision to try to break free.

No Time To Die (2021)

The 25th Bond film is finally released after multiple postponements!

It follows on from Spectre and has car chases, gadgets and stunts as in other Bond films but delves a bit deeper than others, in Daniel Craig’s last outing as Bond.

Although there maybe a number if firsts that occur in this film, James Bond does not change gender.

Last Bus, The (2021)

Timothy Spall stars in this tearjerker film about a widower who decides to fulfil his, and his late wife’s (Phyllis Logan) wish to travel by bus from John O Groats to Lands End, recreating in reverse a journey they made many years ago.

He unwittingly becomes a social media sensation when he interacts with various people en route.
